The pre-registration optometrist is involved in the optometry outpatient clinics for approximately seven sessions a week. These sessions involve all aspects of hospital optometry, including refraction - paediatric, cycloplegic, routine pre- and post-operative cataract and graft, visual field assessment, including Goldmann perimetry, comprehensive contact lens and low vision services and colour vision analysis. Our pre-registration optometrist will participate in the optometry-led post-operative cataract and glaucoma shared-care clinics, which include visual fields, volk 90D disc assessment, anterior segment slit lamp examination, applanation tonometry and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT 3) of the optic nerve head. The optometry department also provides corneal topography, ocular B-scan ultrasound, optical and ultrasound biometry assessments, OCT and anterior segment imaging. Optometrists are involved in extended roles within ophthalmology including; retinal, diabetic, macular treatment (anti-VEGF/Lucentis), cataract and glaucoma clinics.

We provide care in the partial sight clinic, (providing advice, information, optical aids and nonoptical aids), contact lens clinic, refraction, corneal topography, dispensing, colour vision and visual field assessments (Humphrey and Goldmann).  We are also developing and expanding shared care clinics in glaucoma, cataract and macular clinics.

During the year all ophthalmic departments are visited, ophthalmology, surgery, photography, fluorescein angiogram, orthoptic etc. We also provide regular tutorials and mock exams.  We also organise block releases throughout the year to work with a friendly community practice to gain experience of community optometry work for both eye examinations and dispensing experience.

Friday afternoons are reserved for structured teaching.

Pre-Registration Optometrists are expected to complete 8 Sessions in the department examining patients attending the clinics, mentioned above.  They are fully supervised by the Senior Optometrists who are at hand to help with any queries.  We like our Pre-Registered Optometrists to be hard working and take initiative in their work.  Our Optometrists are all very approachable and friendly and we ask our Pre Registered Optometrists to constantly ask questions that will help increase their knowledge and competence.  Each patient examined by the Pre-Reg Optometrists should be discussed with Supervising Optometrist and then and signed off.  

As part of your training we allow our Pre-Registered Optometrists to work 1 day per week, at a local Community Optician in order to gain experience in the community setting.

We encourage the Pre-Registered Optometrists to attend teaching sessions on Friday afternoons and to participate in relevant audits ongoing through the eye department.  During the year there are many opportunities to observe the ophthalmology clinics and regular sessions are arranged throughout the year.

The Optometry Department is involved with the provision of a wide range of clinical services including the core services of adult and paediatric refraction, contact lens fitting, corneal topography, low vision rehabilitation, A-Scan biometry, B-Scan Ultrasonography, perimetry, colour vision, macular/OCT imaging and ophthalmic dispensing.  The department also has a significant extended role in glaucoma co-management, cataract services, and new patient assessment and macular treatment assessment clinics.  Trainee optometrists will be expected to participate and/or observe these extended role activities.  Routine eye examination experience will be provided at a community optometry practice.

Regular opportunities will be given to observe specialist clinics and Trainee optometrists will be expected to attend lectures, tutorials and other teaching opportunities provided by the optometric, orthoptic or ophthalmological staff.

Pre-registration optometrists gain experience in diagnostic, pre- & post- operative, paediatric and routine refraction, contact lenses, low vision assessment, spectacle dispensing and automated visual field analysis. Every case is discussed with one of the experienced senior members of the department. Each pre-reg is encouraged to undertake increasingly complex work as the year progresses and will work as part of a team alongside other professional staff. We organise regular sessions for the pre reg to undertake full routine eye examinations on patients referred for VDU assessments in the hospital and also in community practice with a selected supervisor. 

Tutorials and mock exams are arranged throughout the year. Observations in clinics include Glaucoma, A&E, PCC, Medical retina and Strabismus services, plus the ultrasound, medical illustration and orthoptics departments. All our staff are welcome to attend the Hospital’s evening lectures as well as the Optometry Department’s weekly teaching.

The Department of Ophthalmology is a busy, sixteen Consultant service.  The Optometry Unit consists of nineteen staff of different backgrounds, grades and professions.  We provide pre-registration optometrists with broad experience in many areas of clinical optometry including refraction, contact lens and low vision clinics.  A wide range of equipment is available.

A weekly session is organised for attachment to routine outpatient clinics with medical staff.  Experience in general optometric practice is gained outside the hospital in two community practices.  Specialist ophthalmology clinics and the orthoptic, casualty and operating departments are readily accessible.

All senior clinical staff are experienced tutors and there are currently 6 registered supervisors in the Unit.

There are excellent library facilities in both the Optometry Unit and the Medical School.

The trainee will work in the Department of Optometry, undertaking core Optometric procedures under supervision. Each case is discussed with the supervisor and as the year progresses the pre.reg is encouraged to develop their skills and undertake more complex work. Arrangements are made for weekly observation at the variety of specialist Ophthalmology Out-patient clinics, Eye Accident & Emergency, Artificial Eye unit and ophthalmic operating theatres.  There is the opportunity for frequent practical and theoretical tutorials in the Orthoptic clinics.  Placement at a local community optometric practice is arranged within the year. 

The trainee is encouraged to attend a refresher course, for which funding is available.  Study leave is provided for the exams.  There is a weekly post-graduate ophthalmology teaching session in the Eye Hospital, which all staff are invited to attend.  Additionally, regular tutorials are organised with the supervisors and other team members in their area of speciality.

There is a comprehensive optometry library within the department and the general hospital library.
