COLLEZIONE 1 by MITA "The New Sunglasses...all Green"
MITA, the new eyewear brand that combines fashion and sustainability, presents the new sunglasses from COLLEZIONE 1.
The collection is inspired by current trends, which combine style with sustainability.
The new sunglasses are for fashion lovers and at the same time are also for the new type of conscious consumer that wants to affirm their personality but that is more aware of helping the environment.
All MITA frames are in fact made with recycled and recyclable materials: plastic made from PET bottles and recycled aluminum; even the sun lenses are biodegradable as well as all the components and packaging.
The sunglasses collection stands out for frames with a modern and refined design, with large vintage-inspired shapes alternating with more minimal and contemporary ones.
For example, Brickell (above) women's model characterized by a combination of recycled PET material, in contrast between the front in full colors and Havana temples with shaded lenses.

The female sunglasses Tuscany, on the other hand, is made with recycled aluminum with bio acetate temple end pieces.
The thin and light frame with an original hexagonal shape is characterized by wine red color with smoked lenses and light gold with nuanced brown or blue lenses with a contrasting metal details on the hinge.
Even the men's models evoke retro shapes, like Milano in recycled aluminum and temple end pieces in bio acetate.
The cut of the squared drop lenses renews the aviator shape which marked an era. These sunglasses are proposed in light gold with smoked brown lenses, silver with light blue smoked lenses or light gold with blue lenses.

A Perfect Combination, one great frame range and two complementary stories
Twenty years ago, STEPPER EYEWEAR began combining their ingenious TX5 plastic material with the high-tech metal, Titanium. From the start, this combination was a resounding success with materials ideally suited to eyewear with their complementary characteristics.
‘Both are lightweight and hypoallergenic’ informs Peter Reeve, Managing Director of STEPPER UK Limited. ‘Choosing to use these materials together but in the parts of the frame where they offer most benefit to the wearer elevates eyewear where comfort and fit are taken to the next level.’

Creating the front from TX5 allows for the renowned STEPPER bridge to be constructed to the original German design created by Hans Stepper in 1970. The sculpted, ergonomic bridge sits gently on the wearers nose feeling light and soft; like silk.
TX5 keeps its shape and is unaffected by heat or sweat, but we are more immediately drawn to the aesthetics. Considered as a material with fashion potential, TX5 scores highly with its almost unlimited design and colouring possibilities allowing the designer’s vision to be a reality.
Titanium lugs and temples have inherent properties of rigidity and strength which seem to belie the almost weightless feel. Sophisticated ION plating techniques allow for colouring to work in harmony with the other frame elements.
‘This new addition is a welcome update to the lineage of these ever popular, STEPPER exclusive, women’s combination frames,’ concludes Peter.
The SI-30157 is available in a choice of three colour variations to match most skin tones and weighs just over two teaspoons of sugar (8.4g).

Eyelid hygiene device NuLids launched in the UK
Positive Impact has introduced a new electronic eyelid hygiene device into the UK called NuLids. Aimed at independent practices, NuLids is an innovative therapy for the management of dry eye disease, Meibomian Gland Disfunction and blepharitis.
The device is quick and simple to use either in practice or by the patient at home. An eye cleaning foam, such as DemEx, is applied over the closed eyelid and NuLids then gently massages the eyelid, resulting in lid exfoliation and stimulating meibomian gland expression.
NuLids produces little or no aerosol spray making it a valuable option for practices during this time of Covid-19.
The device’s rotating disposable silicone Soft Tip is normally used for 15 seconds per eyelid twice and is timed by the device to aid compliance. As such the whole treatment usually takes just one minute per day, unless the practitioner deems it clinically necessary for more frequent use.
NuLids cleans bacteria and desiccated skin from the eyelid margin, de-capping and opening the meibomian glands. The massage breaks up stagnant meibum in the glands improving circulation.
“NuLids offers massage and cleaning in one go,” emphasised Positive Impact’s director of marketing and professional services, Nick Atkins, during a webinar on February 4 to officially launch the device. “Results from a multi-centre clinical study is the US showed the device was safely used by patients whilst delivering a statistically significant improvement in the signs and symptoms of Dry Eye Disease.”
Highlighting the potential business opportunities for independents, Mr Atkins said that the practitioner could treat the patient with NuLids and could then recommend or sell the product to them for ongoing home use, with practice revisits to check their compliance.

Venice’s Laguna Nord is still pristine, yet just a few minutes by boat from Piazza San Marco. A place-not-place constantly in motion between land and sea, where nature is real, pure and, at the same time, fragile.
The laguna is a lung that, following the rhythm of the tides, purifies itself every six hours in an endless rise and fall that epitomizes – during this time in which we are overwhelmed by a terrible storm – how fragility is the only way to stay in balance. But to be in balance, one must be solid, that is, have roots and be aware of possessing them. A solidity expressed visually by the larch planks, a temporary work of land art placed in the water as a singular vertical element, a stylized symbol of mooring posts, the huge poles that mark the navigable areas of the canals.
Planks blackened by fire using the ancient Japanese technique of Yakisugi and sunk into the laguna mud. Following the lay of the sandbars, they lend shape to a verticality that becomes an interplay of endless reflections with the models who, blending with the artistic installation, establish a physical, yet fleeting, presence.

Accelerate refraction, without compromising accuracy
Essilor Ltd has launched the new Vision-R700 phoropter for a faster, socially distanced, refraction without compromising accuracy.
As an extension to the Vision-R portfolio, the new equipment obtains a speedy refraction in only three minutes to help reduce the length of an eye examination, whilst achieving accurate and repeatable results.
The innovative technology incorporates a multiple increment algorithm and a series of patient specific smart programmes incorporating Digital Infinite Refraction to shorten the process and give an exact 0.25D refraction.
Instruments director, Paul Cumber said: “By reducing chair time, the new phoropter could help practices see up to two extra patients a day.
“This is invaluable amongst current COVID-19 restrictions and ECPs having to cut back on appointments because of social distancing and lengthy cleaning regimes.”
The Vision-R700 suits a business model of speed and volume of appointments. Unlike the original Vision-R800 model which involves a longer examination to refract precise prescription for personalised lens.
It shares all the innovation of the existing 800 model to give a traditional accuracy step but cuts the testing time in half by halving the measurement stages.
With the ability to be operated up to seven metres away it respects social distancing measures and will help boost consumer confidence during an eye examination.
Paul Cumber added: “It has been specifically designed for practices who see a high quantity of patients each day and makes an ideal upgrade option for ECPs currently using a trial frame and looking for a new phoropter for speedier refractions.
“Until now, the only way to shorten the traditional procedure of bracketing sphere, cylinder and axis independently was by cutting crucial steps. This leads to bigger variances and an estimation of the prescription.
“Using the phoropter will help practices obtain repeatable results to eliminate the discrepancy you can get with a traditional subjective refraction. If a patient returned each year for an eye examination but saw a different optom, there should still be consistency with the outcome.”
Less labour intensive for the patient and ECP
The Vision-R700 makes the eye examination less labour intensive for the patient and ECP too. It is designed to be a shorter test time, with a smoother refraction flow that makes it easier to answer for the patient and less tiring because of the algorithms and optical module.
The changes are quick, quiet and concise, and the patients can see the difference much easier than if there was a delay. This all creates a more pleasant patient experience with the option to show old versus new prescriptions to aid conversations.
It was developed with ease of use as its starting point and guides the practitioner from start to finish. The ECP only needs to record data, while the phoropter changes the dioptric values and relevant tests to achieve the final result.
The phoropter is also much easier to clean than a traditional trial frame which helps speed up the cleaning time between patient appointments.

‘When gold standards change: time to move on from Goldmann tonometry?’

Grafton Optical announce the recent publication of the article ‘When gold standards change: time to move on from Goldmann tonometry?’ in the British Journal of Ophthalmology; representing an important landmark for the Reichert ORA G3 and demonstrating its widely held acceptance among key opinion leaders as the preferred method for measuring IOP.
The article published in this month’s British Journal of Ophthalmology discusses the clear benefits of using the Reichert Ocular Response Analyser (ORA) G3 over Goldmann Applanation Tonometry, and suggests that now is the time for a shift in the clinically accepted ‘gold standard’. It notes that GAT ‘makes important assumptions about corneal thickness and behaviour that are not met in a significant proportion of patients’.¹ In fact, GAT has ‘significant limitations that make it suboptimal and far from the ideal reference standard’.²
‘While many tonometers can reproducibly measure IOP, evidence is fast accumulating that cornea corrected IOP (IOPcc) as measured with the ORA G3, is a better measure of IOP than GAT and should be used more widely.’³
The article goes on to say
‘Studies have shown that ORA-derived IOPcc measurements are superior to GAT in predicting rates of glaucoma progression’.⁴
The article concludes ‘there is a myriad of reasons to abandon GAT and shift to ORA, but most importantly we rely on IOP as a guide to caring for patients. Ultimately the measure of IOP that best predicts who will get worse is the device most able to help us make the right decisions’.⁵

Essilor Ltd has launched a new generation of its iconic varifocal lens, Varilux Comfort Max, designed to bring postural flexibility and reduced eye strain to wearers.
Varilux Comfort Max uses Flex Optim technology to stretch the ‘useful vision zone’ of the lens by up to 46 per cent to help wearers see naturally without having to struggle to find the right gaze direction or the right posture.

Starting from a given vision profile, it adjusts the power progression curve to each prescription, ensuring optimal equilibrium across the vision.

ESSILOR offers HD Dry Eye Diagnosis
Essilor Ltd has taken on the sole distribution of IDRA by SBM Sistemi to offer ECPs advanced high definition testing for dry eye.
IDRA performs a full assessment of the ocular surface via a series of quick tear ﬁlm tests, including the quality of tears and analysis of the meibomian glands, to classify the type of dry eye disease.
A 3D image is produced to help practitioners analyse and understand the eye lid structure. The image can also be shared with a patient to explain the cause of their discomfort and aid treatment recommendations.
When used alongside the TearStim Dry Eye treatment, it can provide ECPs with a complete diagnosis and treatment service for patients living with the most common cause of dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

How IDRA works
IDRA conducts research on the lipid, aqueous, mucin layers and meibomian glands.
• The software automatically detects the coloured lipids on the patient’s eye and determines lipid layer thickness (LLT). In a few seconds it is possible to get automatically relevant data to understand functionality of meibomian glands.
• The aqueous layer is evaluated through the non-invasive “tear meniscus” test and is then classiﬁed into different categories. Through one image focused on the lower tear meniscus, IDRA measures the aqueous production in five different points to calculate an average.
• The stability of the mucin layer and the whole tear ﬁlm is assessed through the study of the break-up time (BUT) or non-invasive break up time (NIBUT), by using a placido cone projected onto the cornea. IDRA projects a structured image on the ocular surface and automatically finds all breakings of the tear film during the recorded video.
• The device can automatically detect the length and width of meibomian glands shown thanks to infrared meibography without requiring any input from the user.
• It also automatically detects and analyses blinking.
In practice, IDRA sits between the slit lamp and biomicroscope, fitting perfectly into the gap created when the plate used for the tonometer is removed.

Paskal for engaging the youngest patients
An almost cinema event with Minion specs and Peppa Pig is the way forward for many practices looking to engage youngsters believes IPRO which is promoting its Paskal 3D refraction technology.
The move away from a mundane letter chart is winning favour with the youngest patients, along with those with specials needs, as award winning Lincoln optometrist, Dr Martin Smith, has found -
“I have 3D Minion goggles for the younger children and they are very keen to wear them. The system works well with youngsters as you don’t need to occlude but you can still test both eyes independently,” he said.
Martin,(above left) who has been using Paskal 3D for three years, likes the system for how it amuses the children with Kay pictures and an array of Paskal’s children’s options.
The added benefit of the system is how it can reveal the eyes’ functionality, both individually and togethe.

Fog Free Vision for Key Workers
Essilor Ltd has relaunched its Optifog lens after experiencing a high demand from ECPs who need a solution to prevent glasses misting under PPE.
The product is suitable for all patients and in particular those who are now wearing PPE as part of their daily lives and who have experienced issues with their current spectacles.
Tim Precious, managing director at Essilor Ltd said: “Fogging reduces visibility and compromises patient care and the key worker’s personal safety.
“The Optifog lens will stop misting becoming a hazard in emergency situations where clear vision is crucial. In doing so, it will provide greater visibility, greater comfort and less fogging for key workers.”
