Vision Expo West held in Las Vegas this year hears about inspirational video.

September 2017

The documentary on vision can inspire doctors, educate patients

Blair Wong an optician involved in the making of the PBS documentary, Sight: The Story of Vision, hopes the film inspires creativity and helps eye care providers “feel great” about what they do for their patients.

Blair Wong, served as an advisor for the documentary, which showed excerpts of the film to attendees at Vision Expo West.

The film, which is available in 13 languages, was released in October 2016, was directed by Kris Koenig and is narrated by Sir Elton John.

“Kris Koenig realized that by telling the story of vision he could have a global effect,” Wong said. “This documentary is about me and about you.”

In the film, professors of ophthalmology described the anatomy of the eye and how vision is produced, discussing light, the lens, the retina and photoreceptors.

The late Brien A. Holden PhD, DSc, OAM, and Kovin Naidoo, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO, discussed the global challenge of uncorrected refractive error.

“It is the leading cause of vision impairment in the world and the second leading cause of blindness in the world,” Naidoo said in the film.(Image left)

Eli Peli, OD, discussed how the invention of the Gutenberg printing press increased the need to read and, hence, the need for spectacles.

Costa CEO Holly Rush noted how wearing glasses became acceptable with help from the movies. “People buy glasses just to wear fashionable frames,” she said.

Experts in the film explained myopia and hyperopia, the use of contact lenses, the prevalence of cataract surgery, drug-eluting contact lenses and stem cell therapy to replace damaged photoreceptor cells in age-related macular degeneration.

OCT trainingOCT and its tremendous potential in practice comes into focus with Heidelberg Engineering’s presence at two highly educational autumn events: AIO on the 1-2 October, and NEG on the 5-6 November.

Attracting three interactive CET points for optometrists and dispensing opticians, the two AIO OCT LIVE workshops take place at the Moller Centre, Cambridge.

Retinal disease is set to be the major focus, with Mrs Rupal Lovell-Patel who leads Anglia Ruskin University’s Optometry course, and plays a key role within the Vision and Eye Research Unit, bringing live case studies for review. These patients will be available for delegates to examine and for a discussion on diagnosis and possible treatment outcomes.

The NEG event at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, also attracts three CET points for Heidelberg Engineering’s OCT LIVE Workshops. Mr Anil Pitalia, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Spa Medica in Bolton, will provide his expert clinical opinion during the workshops and also deliver a key note lecture on the main stage “Where is the business in clinical services?”

He will explore how optometrists can build relationships with private consultants, and how this specialisation can differentiate their practice.

AOP education programme supports locum optometrists.

July 2017

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is partnering with Johnson & Johnson Vision to provide an educational programme of free events targeted to the specific needs of locum practitioners.

The programme launches on 5 July with a peer discussion and workshop in London, accompanied by a virtual class two weeks later. Tailored to the unique needs of locum practitioners, the event will focus on safe practice through continuity of care and multifocal contact lens fitting. In addition to providing enhanced skills and knowledge, the event also aims to give practitioners the valuable chance to discuss and share ideas with their peers.

The programme has already proved extremely popular, with the first event becoming fully booked within a day of launch. Ian Beasley, AOP Head of Education, commented, “There has been significant growth in the locum sector in recent years – the largest rise of any group within the AOP’s membership is locums – and the AOP, working in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision, recognises the specific educational requirements of these practitioners. The first event in London was fully booked extremely quickly, demonstrating the appetite in the sector for content of this type.”

The AOP, in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision, will run three similar regional events in 2017. These will support other locum focused member benefits, including the Association’s new template employment contracts and locum listing service.

Johnson & Johnson

Sheetal Patel, Manager at The Johnson and Johnson Institute, UK said, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the AOP to deliver education that is relevant to the locum practitioner in current optometric practice. We understand the need to support this important group of practitioners and look forward to continuing to help with their professional development for the benefit of enhancing patient care.”
