Alcon sponsors National Ophthalmology Database (NOD)

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists has welcomed a funding boost from industry which will help it run its National Ophthalmology Database (NOD) for cataract surgery after NHS England ceased funding the audit tool in April.

Alcon, a leading ophthalmic supplier, confirmed it would spend £80,000 per year over the next three years to keep the NOD audit running. In addition to the £240,000 pledged by Alcon, B&L has committed to a one-off contribution of £10,000.

Mike Burdon, President of the Royal College said that the investment from Alcon demonstrated how “crucial partnerships between industry the college and are in sustaining projects that make a real difference”, and that the NOD was at the forefront of “reducing complications, achieving high data completeness and resulting in considerable savings for a stretched health service”.

Ocuco’s eGOS Integration: Submit forms 1,3 and 5

Ocuco eGOSThe PCSE system allowing GOS claims to be submitted electronically through PMS is now operational.

Practices can submit GOS forms 1,3 and 5 through Acuitas to the NHS. Staff will be able to capture signatures electronically from the optometrist and the patient to submit forms faster.

Less administration will be required in the processing, tracking and rectification of forms.

Additionally, the validation checks built into Acuitas will ensure claims are being processed accurately causing less rejection.

Real-time status updates give a practice the ability to relay the latest information on a claim to a patient.

As with any Ocuco products, installation will be assisted by the largest support team in the industry.

Optinet rolls out eGOS in England

Optinet has supported five independent practices in England this month to become early adopters of electronic General Ophthalmic Services (eGOS) GOS1 and GOS3 form submissions – with full integration to the company's flagship FLEX practice management system (PMS).

The IT division of the National Eyecare Group (NEG), Optinet was the first to offer eGOS integration to Scottish practices in 2018. It is now rolling out its eGOS programme across England, as Primary Care Support England commences acceptance of e-submissions from the end of October.

Explaining the advantages of eGOS, Chris Smith, Optinet Business Development Manager, said: “Optinet FLEX integration with eGOS not only saves practices time and money, but its pre-validation function reduces the risk of claims being rejected due to data error input on manual forms.

"The system also enables practices to enjoy a longer submission window, because forms no longer have to be collated and posted, and to generally benefit from a more secure way to submit claims.

"So far, feedback from customers has been hugely positive – and we are now looking forward to introducing a statement download and reconciliation function to improve the service yet further," Chris added.

NEG members can apply for a free 12-month trial of Optinet FLEX and get ready for eGOS at the same time.

Expansion follows contact lenses roll out

Positive Impact has announced the appointment of two business development consultants, Paul Humphries and Mike Cornwell, as a result of further expansion.

Paul Humphries

Mr Humphries has worked regularly for Positive Impact from its inception and re-joins the company having worked on a project for Alcon for the past 18 months. He will cover the Midlands area.

Mr Cornwell has worked in optical sales for 15 years and spent most of that time with Sauflon Pharmaceuticals. He joins Positive Impact from Scope Ophthalmics and will cover the North West.

Both appointments follow the roll out of NaturalVue 1-day multifocal contact lenses for presbyopia and myopia management.

The new consultants will predominantly look after NaturalVue and Duette Contact Lenses, as well as Positive Impact’s Dry Eye Zone portfolio.

“Paul and Mike come with a wealth of experience in the contact lens and dry eye sector,” explained Positive Impact’s Director of Marketing and Professional Services, Nick Atkins.

“Having worked with both in the past, I am delighted to have them on the team to introduce even more independent practitioners to the business development opportunities presented by the unique benefits of NaturalVue and Duette hybrid contact lenses," he concluded.
